Mobius Math

At Mobius, we believe that math can be taught differently. We believe that kids learn best when the math is challenging and interesting, but not impossible. Mobius Math is math at their exact level.

We believe that kids learn best with a combination of human teachers AND amazing technology. Technology to find the perfect level of challenge, and human teachers to coach, encourage, and inspire.

We believe that learning happens when kids are working on interesting and challenging math problems, and that lectures and instruction should be just when they need it, not before they even attempt a problem.

If that sounds like your kind of math education, you are in the right place.

What Makes Us Different

Mobius Math is built from the ground up to be kid-centric. We cover the same K-12 math curriculum as schools, but we choose what each kid works on based on their own strengths and challenges, not their age or grade level.

Kids in any Mobius Math program will be working on one of the most modern technology platforms in the education space, but we are strong believers in the power of human teachers to connect with, and get the most out of, every child.

We believe that repetition of the fundamentals until they are second nature, but we allow kids to progress at their own pace as soon as they are mastered.

Unique Paths

J loves attending Mobius every week. Over the past year Mobius has helped J go from being an intimidated math student with low grades to a confident math student who is “an eager participant in class and has an expert grasp of all material covered” - (direct quote from J’s report card).

Ralf, Grade 8 parent

Grade 1 to 12

Our math curriculum covers all the topics you would expect from early numeracy in grade 1 to the advanced topics of grade 12.

Kids progress at their own pace, so many will be working on topics that are ahead or behind what is typical at their grade level.

Outcomes You

Can Expect

We will start with leveling exercises to understand your child’s current strengths and challenges across all key areas (ie, geometry, number sense, algebra, etc).

From that starting point, we will work on units at their exact level of challenge in each area, to build confidence and mastery.

We will return to each learning area every few weeks, to ensure they retain what they have learned, and are able to build on it.

Every week you will receive a detailed report on the areas we focused on, how your young student did, and any topic areas that were a challenge.

How Classes Work

Classes are 45 minutes long, and most kids attend one class per week.

In each class, we do a series of activities, each 7-10 minutes long. All kids will work on skill exercises, younger kids may do some math-powered gaming, and older kids may do some competitive math challenges.

Weekly progress reports highlight areas of challenge and provide optional homework targeted at those specific areas.

FAQs

Here are answers to the most common questions we get.

Live Classes

Our classes are semi-private, usually 1-3 students (some may be slightly different depending on last minute changes or type of class). Every class has a live coach to lead the group, and may have another coach who is learning or guiding the main coach.

We group students by age as the activities kids enjoy differ by age. Level of math is unique per student, so there might be a fairly wide level of math ability in one group, but the kids do not see what each other is working on, so it will not make a difference.

We choose our tutors based on their ability to engage with kids, and their ability to convey a passion for math. They are often late university, or early career, and in STEM or teaching-related degrees/professions.

No, unfortunately Mobius is too common of a name in the math space. The project at www.mobiusmath.com appears to have been deprecated in or around 2017, but we are not related to that project. See our comparison

Yes! We understand that kids’ schedules are hectic and ever-changing. You can sign up for any available time slot, change at any time, and cancel without penalty up to 6hrs in advance. A simple to use online portal lets you manage your own schedule for one or more students.

Math Learning

Our math content spans all of grade school from grade 1 to grade 12. We map to state/provincial curriculum standards to ensure we cover all key topics. Our math is kid-specific, so kids may be working on math that is typical for a later (or earlier) grade.

Every problem has an answer, so you’ll get a very clear sense of where your young student is doing well and where they are currently learning. However, since the curriculum is adaptive, it will increase in difficulty until it finds the point that they are optimally challenged. For that reason, you won’t see us focus on percentage marks in the same way that a math class might.

That’s up to you. Students each have a dynamic set of practice areas where they had some challenges in previous games. Working on them earns points that can be spent on “boosters” in game, so students are often quite motivated to do a bit of practice.

Every week you’ll receive a detailed report on the areas we focused on, how your young student did, and any topic areas that were a challenge.

Account & Sign In

In the portal, as a parent, you can see your linked students’ user names and passwords, and change their passwords there if you would like.

You can reset your password by having us send a link to your email (or the email of your parent). You can also change your password in the profile section of the portal.

Mobius tracks student progress and activity at the account level, so each student must have a separate account. As a parent with more than one child using Mobius, you'll need to have separate accounts for each child so we can keep their math progress from mixing. Creating a separate parent account lets you see how all your children are progressing. If you have a single child using Mobius you can choose to share an account with your child or keep things separate -- up to you!
